Customer of the MonthNovember

Drew Charette

Congrats to to Drew on being our November honor! Well deserved is an understatement. For starters, credit Yas for bringing Drew in as they were looking for to new gym that suited their wants and needs. Drew started here while injured. It’s very challenging to buy-in to a vision of fitness that’s brand new to you and relationships that are brand new while not physically or mentally in your best place. Thank you Drew for trusting in us as you have cautiously come back from a repeating back injury. Some of you may find yourself hopping on a bike and say “holy shit, who was on this?” You know if Drew had a certain bike. He’s tall so the seat is set high and back. Drew’s favorite part of the gym is something everyone loves but is not always highlighted in these Q&A’s, the banter that goes on. I get the opportunity to chat with Drew nearly every morning before or during the 6:45am class and I appreciate the good conversation and phenomenal feedback he offers on various things we do. It’s very interesting to learn how everyone has found functional fitness (CrossFit for most) and how their journey til now has been. Learning that Drew started while in China is amazing because I honestly couldn’t tell translate one thing from Chinese other than “ni hao ma” which means “how are you.” But, movement is universal and when you go to a functional fitness gym anywhere in the world, you can see and feel movement. You may not understand the verbal language but you can certainly operate in a gym and move your body to stay healthy. It probably wasn’t an easy thing to do but credit Drew for getting started there. It’s truly a pleasure to coach Drew because of his interest in learning how to move better and safely. He knows his limits, he ways the risks of certain movements that may cause him more stress and he works hard. I will continue looking forward to having Drew in my classes and our daily conversations.

Q&A
Why did you start functional fitness cross-training?

I was living in China in 2013, and needed a sense of community. I joined the only crossfit gym in Shanghai at the time.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
Former rower

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing functional fitness?
I joined in March of this year, and I’ve been doing functional fitness for ten years now.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
It’s a space that allows me to detach from stressors and focus on myself – while being surrounded by good people.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
My back injury without question. Overall, trusting the rehabilitation process has allowed me to recover and gain confidence back in movement.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
Pre-class banter

What’s your favorite “cheat” food? Margaritas

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
The programming is designed in a way that fosters progress, but doesn’t grind your body down like other training I’ve followed.

What drives you?
Trying new things, and achieving goals. For example, I’ve never rope climbed before, and I’ve never been able to do double unders. These small wins keep me going.

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?
Continuing to rehab my back consciously!
