Customer of the MonthAugust

Dominique Frangiamone

Thank you Dominique for humbly accepting the honor of August Athlete of the Month. You not only deserve it but you set a standard of character inside and outside the gym walls. You will all learn a but more about Dom in her Q&A as I did but one thing she did not mention is the location of work. She travels to and from the Bronx to teach and did that through summer school too. That trip sucks in a car.. and she still managed to have the energy to get to class at night, with a smile and do her best. A coach cannot ask for much more. It’s been a pleasure to coach Dom over the years and it’s great to see her consistency improve. She posseses an amazing attitude and will to improve. I would not know she struggled with this growing up. This is certainly something a number of others can probably relate to. It’s awesome to see the camaraderie when she’s in class. I know she’s always ready to suggest a song or playlist. When you read what Dom would suggest to someone thinking about joining, she hits the nail on the head. You need to try it. And partner style workouts (with the right person) is a great way to break the ice and get a feel for the community. Another thing she mentions is how this syle of training has changed her life. I think this statement is true for many of us. It is for me as well. It builds confidence, humbles us, helps improve our mindset and so much more. Dom, thank you for your hard work and keep bringing the energy.

Q&A
Why did you start functional fitness cross-training?

I started functional fitness/cross-training when I realized I had a very toxic relationship with dieting and the treadmill. I wanted to stop hating what I saw in the mirror and calorie counting. I wanted to feel better mentally and physically. My cousins have been members for a long time and encouraged me to try cross-training.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
I really don’t have much of an athletic background. I was a really shy kid growing up and although I always wanted to join in on teams my anxiety and fear kept me at a distance, watching rather than participating. Fast forward a decade, I now coach the girl’s volleyball team at the school I work at, hoping to inspire and motivate all the shy kids to be brave and join the team!

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing functional fitness?
Wow, it’s been awhile! I’ve been doing Cross-training functional fitness for over 10 years.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
I would have to say that the coaches, members, and programming are my favorite things about the gym. The coaches are so knowledgeable, dedicated, and encouraging. The first class I took at Island Park Fitness, Rob was coaching and it was history from there. He’s definitely been an inspiration in my athletic journey. Even when I continue to doubt myself, both Rob and Ryan have been a constant source of motivation. Because the coaches instill values of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork they’ve created a welcoming environment and community. Shout out to all the members for always cheering each other on.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
The biggest challenge I’ve had since joining the gym was gaining confidence and believing that I can get through the really tough workouts. Remembering it’s ok if I’m not the fastest or the strongest.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
Hero WODS!!!

What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
Cheeseburger and fries!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
“You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” But in all seriousness, it’s not as intimidating as people think, IP fitness offers a really welcoming environment. I suggest trying out a Saturday morning class, partner workouts are a great way to meet members, and the energy is always high. Set small goals, go at your own pace, and always be proud of yourself. Remember the hardest part is walking through the doors.

What drives you?
My students. Especially young girls, I teach middle school and over the last few years watched how much social media has negatively impacted their self esteem. In the past I’ve had girls come to me expressing how they were afraid to try out for a team or participate in gym class because of what others might say or think. I want to be that female role model for them that helps counter stereotypes and boosts their confidence. It’s important to me to show young girls that we are strong and we are capable, even when society tells us otherwise.

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?My goal is to stay consistent and become more efficient with the gymnastic movements, anything on the rig has been the most challenging for me.

Final thoughts:
Cross-training/Functional Fitness changed my life and how I view myself. It has taught me to love my body and its capabilities, to embrace challenges, and to always give my best, no matter the circumstances. I am truly grateful for Island Park Fitness, for all the coaches, the members, the community.
