Customer of the MonthFebruary

Brandon DeStasio

Congrats Brandon on the February honor! As stated multiple times, this monthly acknowledgement often goes to those who aren’t looking for it. There individuals are putting in the put because they want to and are focused on their personal goals. This is exactly the case with Brandon. He is very coachable and interested in learning more. There are usually a couple questions regarding pace, technique or intensity. These are great and it shows Brandon is a thinking athlete. He is one of the most respectful and curious people you will come in contact with. It’s not a show, he means it. I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Brandon a good amount in the morning classes and we often talk about hockey as we are fans of rival teams but have a mutual respect for the game. If you haven’t met Brandon and you’re in the same class, introduce yourself. He’s a good guy. I’m happy to help you improve and assist you toward your fitness goals.

Q&A
Why did you start functional fitness cross-training?

I had previously tried crossfit in High School and enjoyed the high intensity workouts and the community, but after graduating college I chose to stick with commercial gyms. I convinced myself that I didn’t need to workout as hard because I was no longer playing competitive sports. However, going to a commercial gym got quite boring and I was not challenging myself any more. I was looking for something with more structure, more intensity, and ultimately something that translated to more longevity in my health and fitness.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
I played ice hockey and lacrosse growing up and played D3 lacrosse in college.

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing functional fitness?
I joined in July of 2023 and I have been doing functional fitness for just over a year. However, I had done some level of functional fitness in high school and college, but had not for several years after graduating college.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
The programming and the people. I have seen a lot of progress in my strength and cardiovascular limits, but also in movements that I was not entirely comfortable with when I joined, like toes to bar, snatch (still needs work), etc. The variety of movements keeps things exciting and challenging. It is also a great group of coaches and members that keep the environment light and fun, yet competitive and focused. I primarily work from home so I really enjoy starting my day at the gym.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
After spending quite a few years not focusing on cardiovascular exercise, improving my engine still remains one of my biggest challenges.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
The Breast Cancer event was a lot of fun and it was great to contribute to a great cause.

What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
Ben and Jerry’s, preferably Phish Food.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
You wont regret it, it’s a great crew.

What drives you?
Playing sports most of my life, I consider myself to be pretty competitive and strive to constantly improve. So now no longer having sports, that competitiveness translates to improving in the gym. There are so many movements to try to excel in and it keeps the process exciting.

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?
I would really like to improve my overhead Olympic lifts and become proficient in muscle ups.
